John D. Willis is a Nashville-based session guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter whose playing has appeared on countless hit records and chart-topping songs across country, pop, Christian, and Americana music. Widely regarded as one of Nashville’s premier studio guitarists, Willis is known for his versatility across acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, and a wide range of other instruments.

Originally from St. Martinville, Louisiana, Willis first picked up the banjo as a teenager after seeing Roy Clark on "Hee Haw" surrounded by pretty girls and thinking, “I need to learn how to do that.” What began as a teenage attempt to impress girls quickly turned into a serious love of music, eventually leading him to expand into guitar and study at the Guitar Institute of Technology in Los Angeles.

 

In his early 20s, legendary Muscle Shoals keyboardist and producer Clayton Ivey invited Willis to move to Muscle Shoals to learn the art of session playing, promising to book him on every project he kept that promise. Before long, Willis’ playing on a demo session for Alabama caught the attention of the group at the height of their success, leading them to ask him to play on the record itself in Nashville.​

As Willis’ reputation continued to grow in Muscle Shoals, acclaimed keyboardist and producer David Briggs encouraged him to relocate to Nashville, also promising to bring him into his circle of players and onto the projects he produced. A week later, Willis made the move that launched what would become a decades-long career as one of Music City’s most respected and in-demand studio musicians.

Throughout his career, Willis has recorded with an extraordinary range of artists including Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Willie Nelson, Jason Aldean, Jewel, and countless others. His discography spans platinum-selling albums, award-winning productions, film and television projects, commercial music, and an extensive catalog of songs that have topped charts around the world.

In 2002, Willis received the Academy of Country Music’s Guitarist of the Year award, recognizing his elite musicianship and longstanding influence within Nashville’s recording community.

One of Willis’ most meaningful career moments came during a surprise birthday celebration for legendary session guitarist Reggie Young, when Willis was asked to perform Young’s iconic guitar part on the classic hit "Drift Away." A close friend and longtime mentor, Young had once joked that Willis was the only other player who would “play it right” — an honor Willis still considers among the most memorable moments of his career.

In addition to his session work, Willis is an accomplished producer and songwriter who records from his private studio in Brentwood, Tennessee, where he produces songwriter demos, custom records, and music for television and commercial clients. Known for hooky guitar intros, impeccable acoustic timing, and keeping the control room laughing between takes, John D. Willis has earned a reputation not only as one of Nashville’s most respected musicians, but also as one of its most beloved collaborators.

Willis is a proud father to his son, Chase, whom he shares with animal rescue advocate Stephanie Willis.
